Another favorable element of the DeLorean turned out to be its fuel economy performance. The V-6, assisted by some EPA-style tall gearing is rated at 19 MPG over the city cycle. In a mixture of about 50-50 city/highway driving with no regard to economy, we netted 21 MPG.

Out of his subsequent experience in running his own business consultancy grew what DeLorean now calls, "the dream of my life" - the flotation of his own motor company to produce his own car. He has entrusted this scheme to a Northern Ireland labour force, completely inexperienced in the peculiar complexities of running an automobile assembly plant.

When John DeLorean left GM in 1973, he had very little money. They gave him, effectively, a million-dollar settlement - a Cadillac dealership worth a million dollars. He sold it immediately for something like $850,000. But he was just at the stage past two divorces which had cost him a lot of money.

"Here is an interesting project I was involved with. This is a multi-purpose utility vehicle designed by LMC (Logan Machine Company). The same company as the LMC Snow Grooming equipment I was making. Driving the DeLorean around town is like waltzing into the local pool hall with Bo Derek wrapped around your arm, the exterior is so recognizable, so appealing, that few people could fathom looking upon you disapprovingly.

"The event ended with a great speech from Marvin Katz, who was the owner of all the DeLorean parts before they were sold to DMC Houston. Marvin talked about the purchasing of the parts and the sea diving team he hired to photograph the original DeLorean dies that were thrown into the ocean. The dies are still being used to hold down fishing nets, fascinating stuff."
