DeLorean had divorced his first wife and married Kelly Harmon, daughter of the Michigan football great. He grew sideburns at a corporation where many executives combed what little hair they had straight back, and he was a favorite of the news media.

The DeLorean engineers are looking beyond the problems. A more efficient cylinder head is under consideration. A sportier suspension package will soon be available. In September an optional 280-hp twin-turbocharged engine will go into production.

Luggage is carried in a front boot, which also carries the small Spacesaver spare tyre, and on a shelf behind the seats; the company hopes to develop a stretched version of the car with occasional rear seats.

The collapse and closure of the company was far from being the end of the matter, and the DeLorean saga has rumbled on through the US and UK courts ever since. And only recently - June 1 to be exact - has the case finally been closed, making it one of the longest of its kind in American legal history.

Like his $25,000 DMC-12, DeLorean was sleek, streamlined and powerfully built. He took to wearing $700 custom-made suits with Gucci accessories. In fact, it was a 1972 Beverly Hills Gucci party that powerbroker lawyer, Ed Hookstratton, introduced the then 24-year-old Cristina (half DeLorean's age) to an already smitten DeLorean.
