Whether DeLorean resigned in May 1973 or was asked to leave by Gm president Ed Cole is still an unanswered matter. But he was given a prime Cadillac dealership in Florida valued at $1 million and GM 'arranged' for him to become president of the National Alliance of Businessmen, even paying the $200,000 salary that came with the year-long job.

The 6ft 1in. width is at least 5in. too much, and seems 15inc. too much in such a thickly walled, obstructively pillared car – a common complaint against the DeLorean’s European stylist, Giugiaro, who ought to know better.

As DeLorean’s empire crumbled, a system of parts and service was already being established for his cars. Consolidated International, the Ohio firm which actually ran the DeLorean factory during its final days, put away a stock of parts for the future.

By December 1981 with the American recession taking a firm grip, DeLorean sales nosedived. The worst winter on record did little to alleviate problems; it was not the best of times to sell a low-slung sports car. Of the 7500 cars produced in 1981, only 3000 were sold. In January 1982, production was cut to three-day working while retaining all 2600 employees.
